Club notes – July 15

Encanto Garden Club

Encanto Garden Club members were guests July 11 at the country home of Nick and Nancy Fischer. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with all types of nature: Trees, shrubs, flowers and rocks. One area is dedicated to southwest plantings. The tour was hosted by Olga Magness and refreshments were served on a raised deck overlooking the area. Club president Jacque Wuest presided over the business meeting and Carmen Gilcrest of Melrose gave a presentation on the various types and styles of raised vegetable gardens and how they can be irrigated. Door prize was won by Barbara Voges. Club members made plans for organization of the flower show entries at the upcoming Curry County Fair. Residents are encouraged to bring horticulture specimens for competition. The fair book provides all information on how to prepare these entries or you may call Helen at 762-0711 or Jacque at 762-6955.

Clovis Oddfellows

The Clovis Oddfellows met July 5 with Noble Grand Evelyn Calden presiding. The members were very pleased to be able to use the recently installed sound system. During the business meeting, plans were made for the next special meeting in which Jerry Holland was chosen to be honored as Oddfellows Good Samaritan. Good Samaritan is the New Mexico Grande Masters theme for this year. Grand Master will present a plaque to Larry Holland.

The regular Oddfellow meeting will be at 2 p.m July 26 at the IOOF hall, 405 Main Street. The presentation and party will be at 7:30 p.m. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Altrusa of Clovis

Altrusa International of Clovis held their monthly program meeting on July 9 at Muffley's Back Door. Members present were Kathy Travis, Judith Glikas, Margaret Blazek, Sylvia Bean, Emily Crowe, Joanne Winslow, Carolyn Muffley, Nancy Taylor, Pat McCullough, Margaret Hinchee, Mary Weigl and Laurie Westerman. Guests in attendance were Patricia Bazar and Gerry Billy. President Sylvia Bean called the meeting to order with the opening prayer. Sylvia gave the Altrusa Accent. Hostesses Sylvia Bean and Carolyn Muffley served a delicious meal. Curry County Detention Center Administrator, Gerry Billy, gave a very informative and interesting program about the detention center.

Closing prayer and meeting was adjourned. There will be a business meeting at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Altrusa of Portales

The Altrusa International, Inc. Club of Portales met on July 9 at the Central Annex. President Nellie Dyer called the meeting to order. There were 16 members and two guests present. Wanda Pettus led the opening ceremonies. Jo Nell Brooks gave the Altrusa Accent and Sharon Smith drew for the Queen of Hearts.

The club approved a board recommendation to purchase 20 box fans to give to United Way for people who do not have air conditioning. The funds come from the Service fund.

Pat Willis and Sheryl Borden updated the club on the Membership Teams contest and recognized those who have scheduled events.

Linda Leaming announced that the next meeting will be on July 23 and Andy Mason will be the presenter. Nancy Legleiter introduced Glenn McCoy, treasurer of Meals on Wheels, and he told about the program and thanked the club for helping deliver the meals. Leaming presented McCoy with a certificate of appreciation from the club.
