ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Christian on Saturday became the second Lone Star Conference member this week to join the Division I Southland Conference.
ACU will join the league July 1, 2013, which means the Wildcats will begin playing NCAA Division I athletics in the 2013-14 school year. Because of previous schedule commitments, the football team will begin Southland play in 2014, but all other sports will begin Division I competition with the 2013-14 school year.
Incarnate Word opted to leave the Division II LSC and join the Southland earlier this week.
ACU was a member of the Southland from 1963-73 before moving to NAIA and the Lone Star Conference prior to the 1973-74 school year. ACU has been a member of the LSC for 39 years with the 2012-13 athletic year marking its 40th and final year in the LSC.
