Texico's Kimber Harrison, left, and Taylor Stevens set up a wall against Portales hitter Audri Underhill during a Saturday afternoon scrimmage at Rock Staubus Gym. The six-time defending Class 2A state champion Lady Wolverines open the 2012 regular season tonight at Melrose.

Coach: Kristen Scanlan (5th year)

2011 record: 22-2 (beat Bosque 3-0 for sixth consecutive Class 2A championship)

Returning lettermen: 3

Returning starters: Shaylee Anderson, Sr. OH; Mel Lucero, Sr., lib.

Of note: The Lady Wolverines should contend for another Class 2A title, but are trying to replace four starters, including standout twins Jaylyn and Jordyn Cooper at outside hitter. Scanlan is looking for her six-strong senior class to provide leadership.

Coach's take: "We've got girls working hard to replace those positions. If you set the ball to Ja or Jo, 95 percent of the time it's going down. This year's team is hard-working and scrappy. They're kind of role players, honestly, and they're going to have to play their roles for us to be successful."

"They've lot a little bit off last year's team, but they're still good," King said.

The Lady Tigers lost to Animas in the 2006 final, and reached the 1A semis two other times — including in 2006 when they suffered their only loss of the season to then-district rival and eventual champion Fort Sumner after having beaten the Vixens three times during the season.
