Ruth Chavez liked the way her team played Thursday night.
Junior Kristen Wagner collected 18 kills and the Lady Rams improved to 2-0 this season by whipping Roswell High 23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-12 at the Ram Athletic Center.
"I thought we played really well," Chavez said. "It was a fast-paced (match), but I thought momentum was always with us even when we lost the first set."
Portales trailed most of the first game and saw a late rally fall short, but the Lady Rams were in control much of the time after that. They held off the Lady Coyotes in Games 2 and 3, then overcame an early 10-4 deficit in the fourth set with a finishing 21-5 kick.
"Our passing was good tonight," Chavez said. "We were able to run our offense."
Junior Savannah Vincent had seven kills and 10 blocks for the Lady Rams, while junior Simone Laurenz added seven kills.
"They're a very good team," Chavez said of the Lady Coyotes. "I just thought we played pretty well tonight."
Portales also took victories in the junior varsity preliminary 23-25, 25-23, 15-9 and in the C-team matchup 25-17, 25-17.
PHS returns to action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. road contest at Santa Fe Indian.
