Fort Sumner, Elida advance to semis in Capitan tourney

CAPITAN — Fort Sumner and Elida advanced to the semifinals of the eight-team Capitan Classic volleyball tournament on Friday night.

The Vixens (8-1) cruised past Cloudcroft 25-13, 25-12, 25-23 while the Lady Tigers (11-0) were taken to five sets before outlasting Animas 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9.

Fort Sumner will take on three-time defending Class 1A champion Tatum in a 10 a.m. matchup today, while two-time Class B champion Elida faces Carrizozo in the other semifinal at 11:45 a.m.

The third-place match is set for 3:15 p.m., with the championship to be played at 5 p.m.

Elida and Fort Sumner competed in Pool B and finished second and third, respectively, behind Tatum. Carrizozo won Pool A, followed by Cloudcroft, Animas and Capitan.

In other quarterfinal matches on Friday, Tatum blanked Capitan 3-0 and Carrizozo shut out Mescalero 3-0.
