CANYON, Texas — Junior guard Rodney Blackmon scorred 17 point and junior guard Rafael Love had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds Friday as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 83-69 in West Texas A&M's Thanksgiving Classic.
The Greyhounds (2-2) put five players in double figures and shot 53 percent from the floor (29-of-55, including 9-of-22 from 3-point range, while holding the Thunderwolves (1-4) to 36 percent (24-of-67) and 10-of-33 from 3-point distance.
Junior forward Dennis Hardwell added 14 points and eight rebounds for ENMU, while juniorfprward Phil Henry chipped in 12 points and junior guard Jordan Romero went 3-for-5 from beyong the arc and finished with 10 points.
Senior guard Arden Dennis led Pueblo with 17 points. Junior point guard Nathan Tigner and junior guard Wendell Lee scored 12 each, and junior forward J.J. Mina added 10.
ENMU never trailed in the game, and it was tied only once — at 9-9 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Lee. To that point, all the scoring for both teams was on 3-pointers.
The Hounds went in front on a basket by Hardwell at the 16:45 mark, setting off an 8-0 run. The margin grew to 37-21 on a 3-point play by Love with 3:37 left in the half, and ENMU went into the break with a 41-28 cushion.
The Thunderwolves held the Hounds scoreless for more than four minutes to start the second half, but only managed to cut six points off their deficit. Two free throws by Blackmon at the 15:55 mark made it 43-34 and the lead grew back to 14 with less than 15 minutes to go on Romero's 3-pointer and a layup by Henry.
The Hounds built their lead to 16 points three more times. Pueblo made its final run midway through the half, getting 3-pointers from Tigner and Dennis and two free throws by Tigner to make it 56-48 with 10:24 left.
The Hounds used another 7-0 spur to push the lead to 66-50 with seven minutes left, and the margin was never under 10 the rest of the way.
