KENW-TV has collected $7,388 in its first weekend of airing pledge programs.
The public TV station at Eastern New Mexico University is holding its annual Winterfest Membership Drive in which pledge programs will be aired during prime time hours for the week.
Rena Garrett, KENW development promotion director, said incentives are offered to encourage viewers of the programs to donate funds to the station for its programs.
She said pledge programs will include music and health informative specials, during which books, CDs and DVDs will be offered as gifts to those who are willing to donate certain amounts, which can range from $60 to $240.
KENW-TV master control operator Sean Moore checks the schedule for television programs Monday afternoon at the KENW station. Throughout prime time hours this week, the station is airing pledge programs as part of its Winterfest Membership Drive to raise money for programming.
"We really appreciate all of our viewers and their support," Garrett said. "Every dollar counts, so if anyone can't give the higher pledge amounts, we just appreciate what they can give."
Garrett said last year, the annual fundraiser raised more money than ever before, bringing in $20,000 compared to the $10,000 to $15,000 collected in previous years.
"Part of it was that before, we didn't have access to satellite," Garrett said of the jump in funds last year, saying that being added to satellite TV brought in more viewers for the station. "We have pledges come from all over the state now because they carry us on satellite."
Garrett said she would love to see $20,000 raised again this year with the pledge programming but she feels doubtful the station will collect that much.
"I'd love for us to (get $20,000), but people may not feel comfortable pledging too much because of the state of the economy," she said.
Jenifer Baca, director of programming, said whereas Garrett is busy taking pledges during the fundraiser, she is busy beforehand searching for and buying pledge programs for them to air during the week.
"We try to do programs that will capture the interest of our audience and that fit along the same genre as the normal scheduled programs," Baca said. "With what's been done in the past, it seems our audience likes programs about health and programs about music."
Baca said a Doo-wop music special will be aired this week, along with a music special with artist Nathan Pacheco.
"I know the pledge drives interrupt regular programming but they are important, so we appreciate our viewers' patience," Garrett said.
