Lady Broncos finish fifth at Texico

TEXICO — The Floyd Lady Broncos beat Melrose 58-44 on Saturay to claim fifth place in the Citizens Bank Border Shootout.

The Lady Broncos ran out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter, then finished off the Lady Buffs with a 15-4 surge in the final stanza. Tabitha Ornlas scored 15 points for the Lady Buffs while eight others contributed to the scoring column.

The Lady Buffs (1-2), who won the Class 1A state championship last season, were led by 13 points from Reagan Carthel and 11 from Caley Barnard.

In other final-round games, Grady defeated the Texico junior varsity 43-35 for seventh place, Logan downed Farwell 47-33 for third and Friona topped Texico 39-27 in the championship game.

On the boys side, the Dimmitt (Texas) junior varsity kept Floyd winless for the sason at 0-4 with a 49-41 victory in the seventh-place contest.

Colby Rogers led the Broncos with 20 points. Floyd led 13-10 at the quarter, but was outscored by the Bobcats in each of the final three stanza.

In other boys final-round results, Melrose beat Grady 58-48 for fifth place, Logan defeated Friona 45-36 for third and Farwell outlasted host Texico in the championship game.
