Lady Dons edge PHS in final seconds

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Portales Lady Rams came up a bit short on Saturday.

West Las Vegas scored the go-ahead basket with about 20 seconds left and the Lady Dons held on for a 45-45 win over PHS, which was coming off a win over Las Vegas Robertson on Friday.

Senior forward Michelle Tapia scored 12 points for WLV (7-2), which trailed by one point in the final minute before forcing a Portales turnover.

The Lady Dons got a tying free throw, missed the second shot but collected the rebound. After a timeout, junior Shania Gallegos got loose for the go-ahead score. A last-second try by the Lady Rams (7-3) was off the mark.

"We just didn't execute when we needed to," PHS coach Clay Stout said. "The little things got us beat tonight.

"We just didn't play very well. I thought (WLV) came up with the hustle plays, and that was probably the difference in the ballgame."

Freshman Kambrey Blakey posted a game-high 18 points for the Lady Rams, including 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Junior Savannah Vincent added 11.

Portales makes its fourth consecutive weekend road trip in a tournament hosted by Roswell Goddard from Wednesday through Friday. The Lady Rams open against Los Alamos at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
