ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams advanced to the semifinals of an eight-team holiday tournament being hosted by Roswell Goddard on Thursday with a 57-52 victory over Los Alamos.
The Lady Rams (8-3) will face either Goddard or Santa Fe Capital in a 3 p.m. semimfinal matchup today.
"It was kind of a game of runs," said PHS coach Clay Stout, whose team was coming off a two-point loss at West Las Vegas on Saturday. "We played better. They had a really nice team."
Freshman Kambrey Blakey poured in 25 points for the Lady Rams while junior guard Francis Armijo, playing her third game after coming off an injury, added a personal-best 11 points.
"She's come back and playing strong," Stout said of Armijo. "That's helping us with our depth."
Portales led 10-4 at the quarter, but the Lady Hilltoppers took the lead in the second quarter and trailed just 26-25 at halftime. The teams were tied 36-36 after three periods, but the Lady Rams controlled much of the final period, building a 10-point lead at one time.
"The girls did a nice job of making that (late) run," Stout said. "We got a little lax toward the end; we just didn't take care of the ball a couple of times."
PHS went 18-for-26 from the foul line for the game, led by freshman Sheraya Cox with 6-for-6. That was double the output of Los Alamos, which was 9-for-13.
Hayley Each scored 17 points and Erin Kirk added 14 for the Lady Hilltoppers.
