Rams win pair in first day of Littlefield tournament

LITTLEFIELD — The Portales Rams used big fourth quarters Thursday to win twice and advance to the semifinals in Littlefield's Wildcat Classic basketball tournament.

Portales stretched its early-season winning streak to three by overhauling Shallowater 65-62, then blowing out Andrews 84-56. The Rams (4-3) will face undefeated Denver City in a 4 p.m. (MST) semifinal game today.

Senior guard Zach Blaeser scored 19 points and junior guard Jarret Faust added 16 in the Rams' win over Shallowater. Portales trailed by 11 after tallying only five points in the third period, but outscored the Mustangs 28-14 in the final stanza behind eight points from Faust and seven from junior forward Daniel Sanchez.

"The whole difference in the ballgame was that our fullcourt pressure got to them," Rams coach Rickie McBroom said. "We got some turnovers, and it got us going."

The Rams took their first lead with 1:40 remaining in the game when senior forward Reyes Calbert drove to the basket for a layup. Sanchez added a free throw with three seconds to go.

Micah Bailey led all scorers with 26 points for the Mustangs, including 14-of-14 from the free throw line. Shallowater finished the night 24-of-28 on free throws.

Portales had an easier time against Andrews (3-9), but also used a big final quarter (27-12) to finish off the Mustangs.

PHS had a seven-point halftime lead before erupting for 51 points the rest of the way.

"We really got it going in the third quarter," McBroom said. "We changed our pressure and it really got to them.

"Our kids did an excellent job playing two games in one day. We were able to spread our minutes around pretty well."

Eight players had at least seven points for the Rams, led by junior guard Isaiah Alvarado with two 3-pointers and 14 points. Also in double figures were Sanchez (12), Faust (11) and junior forward Nathan Chavez (10).

Andre Martinez had 13 points for Andrews, and Anthony Malloy added 11.
