ROSWELL — Despite three potential game-winning shot attempts in the final 10 seconds, the Portales Lady Rams fell to Roswell High 32-31 Friday in the championship game of the Roswell Goddard Holiday Classic.
Freshman Kambrey Blakey scored 15 points and freshman Sheraya Cox added eight for the Lady Rams (9-4), who rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to push the Class 4A Lady Coyotes to the buzzer.
"We had some good looks," Portales coach Clay Stout said. "They kind of rattled in and rattled out. It was a good championship game."
Tiffanie Bolanos scored 10 points for Roswell High (7-4), including what turned out to be the game-winner from in close with under 30 seconds to go in the game.
Down 18-13 at halftime, Portales rallied in the third quarter behind Blakey and Cox. Blakey scored five points and Cox four as Portales tied the game at 25 heading into the final eight minutes.
"We did a better job on our defensive rotation and got several stops back-to-back," Stout said. "On offense we got loose for a couple of back-door cuts and Blakey drive to the basket a couple of times."
Portales led by four with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter when Balanos hit a 3-pointer to rally her team.
"We kept our composure," Stout said. "They're really athletic and really get after you. But I think we handled the pressure really well."
Portales beat Los Alamos 57-52 and Goddard 34-27 to reach the finals in the three-day, eight-team tournament.
"We got to play three really good games back-to-back, and the best part was we played our best game and played our hardest in the last game," Stout said. "We got progressively better throughout the tournament, and that's what you want to do."
