Trent Internationale reaches boys final; Gallup in girls

Sugar Land, Texas-based Trent Internationale advanced to the finals of the boys Southwest Dairy Farmers Classic on Friday at Rock Staubus Gym by beating El Paso Cathedral 59-49.

Senior guard Qua Foster scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for the Phoenix (9-3), who pulled away from a 41-41 tie early in the final stanza.

Junior Tony Reyes had 14 points to lead the Irish (7-14), who will play for third place today.

In boys consolation semifinals, St. Michael's defeated the Clovis High junior varsity 71-36 while Hereford cruised past El Paso Harmony Science 78-43.

Junior Justin Flores scored 12 points and 5-foot-6 senior Cory Serna added 10 for St. Michael's (4-4). The Horsemen used a 29-point second quarter to open a 44-16 halftime lead over the JV Wildcats (6-2).

Sophomore Marquise Gaither had a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points for Clovis.

In the girls Plateau Wireless Holiday Classic, the Gallup Lady Bengals advanced to today's 6 p.m. championship against Clovis with a 56-47 victory over Amarillo Caprock.

Junior guard Kaylee Tsinginie scored 14 points for Gallup (9-1), which will try to avenge a loss to CHS in the finals of the Lady Bengals' tourney earlier this month. Senior guard Jennifer Perez scored 11 points and junior guard Brooklyn Artis added 10 for the Lady Longhorns (12-8).

Also, Andrews (Texas) improved to 10-9 with a 60-52 win over Albuquerque High behind 22 points from senior post Eleanor Ridge.

Senior guard Kaitlyn Steele had two 3-pointers and 12 of her 17 points in the first quarter for the Lady Mustangs, while senior forward Liz-Aimee Guevera added 10 points. The Bulldogs (2-5) got 19 points from freshman guard Danae Ruiz and 18 points, including five 3-pointers, from sophomore guard Jada Douglas.
