Downtown revitalization is in full swing in Clovis and Portales, and local MainStreet programs have been hard at work behind the scenes to help revamp these historical areas and bring fresh, fun events to area residents.

While the constant road construction in Portales has brought its fair share of headaches for drivers, MainStreet is using it to its advantage.

Foley Bluegrass Band performed at the Yam Theatre last August as part of the Yam's music series. The concert series contributes to the liveliness of the Portales downtown area.

"Portales MainStreet has reinstated its Façade Grant Improvement Program," said Sandy Van Der Deen, Portales MainStreet manager. "With the road construction coming through downtown, we felt this is a great time to update the façades of businesses."

Further north, the long-awaited grand opening of the Hotel Clovis is slated for next month, and Clovis MainStreet members are making further revitalization a top priority.

"We are always visiting with people wanting to bring a business downtown," said Lisa Dunagan, president of Clovis MainStreet.

"We are also working towards a theater district along with an arts and culture district," she explained. "We have much to offer with three historic theaters that have different capabilities, along with talented people in our community."

With summer on the horizon, Clovis and Portales MainStreet programs are also gearing up for events and concert series for local residents to enjoy.

"A new event that will be happening in Clovis this summer is Music on MainStreet," said Dunagan. "Several performances will be held throughout the summer that include different types of music and food vendors to enjoy in the evening."

Clovis MainStreet will also be involved with the annual sidewalk sale later this summer, which is hosted by local merchants.

Portales is already in the swing of things with a monthly music series at the Yam Theater.

"This month's music series features Andy Mason with a special concert all in Spanish," said Van Der Deen. "The Yam Music Series will also be continuing this summer."

In addition, Portales MainStreet is planning a cleanup day to pick up trash, pull weeds and help beautify downtown. For the active type,Portales MainStreet will host the annual Heritage Days 5K Fun Run on June 15.
