A 43-year-old Portales man was shot in the leg Monday and taken to Lubbock by ambulance, according to Portales police.
Officials did not release the injured man’s name and his current condition is unknown as the incident remains under investigation.
“We got a 911 call (Monday) afternoon and the call lasted 15 seconds. He stated that he thought his leg had been shot and hung up,” said Portales Chief of Police Doug Jones. “He called back 45 seconds later and he requested assistance.”
The incident took place in a home on the 100 block of South Houston, according to police. Jones says based on preliminary investigation, it did not appear he was shot in any other location than where he was found.
Jones said he has not identified a shooter but up to six men including the wounded man were found in the home when police responded.
Jones said it appears the gunshot came from a 45 caliber firearm.
“A weapon of that caliber was recovered at the scene,” Jones added.
Jones said no suspects have been named as the matter is still under investigation and no one has been charged in the incident as of Tuesday afternoon.
