Meetings Watch: Portales Board of Education — Aug. 18

The following was took place at the Portales Municipal Schools Board of Education meeting Monday night:

  • The board accepted a donation of more than 1,900 new school supplies from the United Way of Eastern New Mexico. These are the items from the Stuff the Bus event held in Portales on Aug. 3.
  • The board adopted revisions to the Policy and Procedure Handbook. Changes include:
  • Policy for school board meetings
  • Policy for notification of board meetings
  • Policy for agenda preparation and dissemination
  • Policy for harassment/bullying/cyberbullying
  • Student extracurricular activities drug and alcohol testing policy revision
  • Athletic/activities code of conduct revision
  • The board approved a motion to remove former Superintendent Randy Fowler from all bank accounts and replace him with new Superintendent Johnnie S. Cain.
  • Approved out of state travel for Portales High School Students.
  • Girls basketball Dec. 5-7 for the Muleshoe Tournament.
  • Girls and boys basketball Dec. 26-28 for the Littlefield Tournament.
  • Band Oct. 5 for the Denver City Marching Competition.
  • Denied motion to renew National School Board Association participation.
  • Approved four budget adjustment requests.
  • Budgeting increase of $20,900. (Increase from last year’s budget.)
  • Sale of educational technology bond $450,000. (Technology bond will be used for software licenses and new computers.)
  • Redistributed unused funds from 2012-2013 — $1,650.
  • New Mexico Reads to Lead award $93,200. (Awarded from the governor, will be allocated as salary for teacher and aide who will specialize in reading from pre-K to first grade.
