ROSWELL — Roswell Goddard spoiled the coaching debut of Portales High’s Sara Vasquez on Friday, handing the Lady Rams a 3-0 loss in the quarterfinals of Roswell’s Alien tournament.

PHS returns to action at 9 a.m. today against Santa Teresa in the consolation semifinals, then will face either Chaparral or Valencia for fifth place (1 p.m.) or seventh (3 p.m.) to wrap up the event.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted, but hopefully we’ll come out better tomorrow,” Vasquez said. “Tonight it just took us a while to get going.”

The Lady Rockets (2-0) took the lead on a goal by Bethany Alvarez about midway through the opening half, then added second-half tallies from Desarae Flores and Caitlyn Schmidt to put the match out of reach.

Averi Mann recorded the shutout in goal for Goddard, collecting nine saves, while Jasmine Vega had 11 saves for PHS.
