ENMU hires third baseball coach in 22 years

David Gomez, an assistant coach at Alcorn State University for the last four years, was hired Tuesday as Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball coach, according to a school press release.

Gomez will be just the third coach in the program’s 22-year history. He takes over for Chris Terry, who left in August to take a job at Regis College in Colorado.

“Due to the timing of having to fill this position, I was concerned about the quality of our candidate pool,” ENMU athletics director Jeff Geiser said in the release. “However, after receiving over 50 applications, I believe we have hit a home run with the hiring of David Gomez.

“He has ties to New Mexico and West Texas, has been an assistant coach at Division I Alcorn State University, and is ready to take the reigns as a head coach.”

Gomez was also the recruiting coordinator Alcorn State, A Division I school in Lorman, Miss.

Gomez also served as an assistant coach at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas, and New Mexico Military Institute.

He was a pitcher an outfielder Gomez at NMMI and Southern University.

He is a graduate of South Lafourche High School in Cut Off, La.

The Greyhounds were 35-59 record in two season under Terry, including a 21-27 mark in 2013.
