MORIARTY — Portales coach Ruth Chavez said playing in this weekend’s Moriarty Invitational gave her a good feel for where her team is at early in the season.

She likes what she sees after the Lady Rams beat Class 5A Santa Fe High 22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23 Saturday evening for the tournament title.

“Our depth is pretty good right now,” Chavez said. “We have a strong senior class that is experienced and maturing.

“We have some little things to work like our blocking and our defensive positioning. But I saw a of of good things.”

The Lady Rams (5-1) advanced to the finals with a 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Roswell Goddard behind 18 kills from senior Kristen Wagner.

“It was a good all-around game for us,” Chavez said of the Goddard match. “We had an outstanding defensive game from Simone Laurenz.”

The Lady Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Clovis.
