SANTA FE — Eastern New Mexico University scored twice inside the first 14 minutes and sophomore goalkeeper Xan Ortiz and her defense made the goals stand up for a 2-0 neutral-field victory over Western State (Colo.) in matches played at Santa Fe Prep H.S.

Freshman Jenna Sievers, who played high school soccer for two years each in Portales and Clovis, tallied her first collegiate goal in the seventh minute, converting a steal into a tally with a shot that banked into the net off the right post. At the 13:18 mark, senior forward Brook Serrano found junior forward Maurisa Jones on the right side of the box for another goal.

That margin held up as the Zias (1-1) kept the Gunnison, Colo.-based Mountaineers from many scoring opportunities. Western State managed only two shots on goal against Ortiz, who notched her fourth shutout in two seasons at ENMU.

The Zias earned a split in their season-opening matches against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition at Santa Fe after losing 3-2 in overtime on Friday to Regis.

The Zias open their home slate with a 2:30 p.m. match today against Central Washington at the ENMU pitch.
