Lady Rams coast past Goddard

ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams have been looking to finish off matches lately. Tuesday night, they got that accomplished.

Senior Kristen Wagner had 12 kills and 19 digs to lead PHS to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 win over Roswell Goddard.

Coach Ruth Chavez said her team has had a tendency to struggle this season at times after building early leads. This time, the Lady Rams (7-1) put their opponent away in short order.

“We played really well,” Chavez said. “Our serving was really solid. They (Lady Rockets) couldn’t run anything. We were able to take them out of their comfort zone.”

Senior Simone Laurenz added five kills, two aces and 14 digs for Portales. Sophomore Sheraya Cox had seven digs, three aces and 10 assists and her sister, senior Pari Cox, added seven assists.

The teams split preliminary matches. The Portales junior varsity notched a 25-23, 23-25, 15-11 win over Goddard while the Lady Rockets took the “C” matchup 25-15, 25-27, 15-12.

Portales returns to action on Tuesday against Roswell High at the Ram Athletic Center.
