Water service returned to Portales

A water main break on Wednesday night left multiple homes and businesses on the west side of Portales with little or no water for hours.

“It was from about Avenue K to Industrial (street), from Taco Box on west,” said Portales Public Works Director John DeSha.

DeSha said the break occurred  across from the Holiday Inn Express off of U.S. 70. Most water customers had service restored late Wednesday or this morning.

Holiday Inn Express and the Super 8 Motel were among businesses impacted.

“At 7:30 p.m. we got calls from our customers saying that the water wasn’t working,” said Lisa Montoya, general manager at the Super 8.

Parin Kumar, the general manager at Holiday Inn Express, said the water went off around 7:26 p.m. and came back on at 11:07 p.m.

“I didn’t know how to get a hold of the city so late, so I called the fire department. They got a hold of the city for us,” said Kumar.

Water service at both hotels has been restored.

City officials are working to repair a faulty pipe.

“We’d like it done by the end of the day, but realistically it should be done by tomorrow,” DeSha said.

DeSha said the pipe is being dug up today, and solutions to fix the problem have already been laid out.

“If the pipe can be clamped, we will do that and it should be done around tomorrow. If the pipe needs to be replaced, we will have to order a new one, which will take about a week because they don’t have pipe like this in stock. We call and order it, and then they make it,” said DeSha.
