Clovis coach Traci Sievers liked the way her team responded with a few starters held out with injuries.

Samantha Meza scored a pair of goals and Shelbi Jones made four saves as visting Clovis beat Portales 4-1 Thursday in a girls non-district match.

Carrie Sharp added a goal and an assist for the Lady Cats (10-4), who led 3-0 at halftime

Damari Jimenez converted a penalty kick late in the game for Portales.

“In the first half we came out really strong,” Sievers said. “We were making good runs and connecting passes and producing a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Sievers was especially pleased at how “several players” stepped up to replace junior center back Sarena Garcia.
