ENMU women post win at Vernon rodeo

VERNON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women dominated in breakaway roping and the Zias captured the championship in the Vernon College rodeo over the weekend with 270 points.

South Plains College was second with 180 points and Texas Tech third at 152. Tarleton State was the team winner on the men’s side with 470 points, followed by Odessa College at 440, while ENMU split eighth through 10th place at 130.

Freshman Shelby Rita took both the short go and the average in breakaway, while junior Taylor Smith finished third in the event after placing third in the short go. Freshman Tierra Gray and senior TiAda Gray were fifth and sixth in the event, while TiAda Gray also placed fifth in the first go of barrel racing.

Also for the Zias, Hayden Segelke and Keely Wagner were third and sixth, respectively, in goat tying.

For the men, senior Rodney Garcia teamed with Odessa’s Eli Lord for third in team roping after a third-place finish in the short round. Senior Logan Medlin and partner Billy Bob Brown of Tarleton State split fifth and sixth in the event.

ENMU returns to action in the Frank Phillips College rodeo, beginning on Thursday at Borger, Texas.
