The Portales Lady Rams gave unbeaten Class 4A power Artesia a good run for its money on Tuesday night, only to come up short.

The Lady Rams were positioned to take a 2-1 lead in the third game, but Artesia rallied back and posted a 25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 win over PHS at the Ram Athletic Center.

The Lady Bulldogs (14-0) are led by 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker Sam Matthews around the net, but PHS coach Ruth Chavez said Matthews used a lot of tip shots against her squad.

Senior Simone Laurenz had 12 kills and senior Kristen Wagner added 10 kills and 28 digs for the Lady Rams (9-4), coming off a second-place finish in their own Peyton Chavez Tournament of Champions over the weekend.

Coach Chavez said her team missed a chance in the third set, eventually losing by two points.

“We had a good lead in that third game and we let it get away,” she said. “Had we cut our errors in about half, we probably could’ve won the match.”

The teams will meet again on Oct. 19 in Artesia, and Chavez said the Lady Rams are looking forward to the rematch.

“We learned a lot from this team,” she said. “They’re just a smart, smart team.”

Portales is idle until next Tuesday when the Lady Rams visit Texico.
