Texas Woman’s tops Zias in three

Josie Santos notched 13 kills and six digs on Friday and Texas Woman’s earned a 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Arena.

The Pioneers (13-5, 5-1 LSC) stayed in the midst of the conference race with the victory heading into a showdown today at No. 9 West Texas A&M (15-3, 5-0). The Zias (4-11, 2-4) host Texas A&M-Commerce in a 2 p.m. start today.

ENMU got double-doubles from freshman outside hitter Courtney Lawson (11 kills, 12 digs) and junior setter Kennedi Catano (24 assists, 14 digs).

Texas Woman’s dominated the opening set, but Game 2 went back and fourth with 13 ties and eight lead changes before the Pioneers finally won out.

Texas Woman’s led 17-9 in the third set. The Zias closed to 22-17 after a TWU attack error, forcing a timeout, but the Pioneers came back to get the final three points and finish the match.

Chloe Tate added 10 kills for the Pioneers, while Kimberly Bell had four of the team’s nine aces and Morgan Wilson posted a match-high 18 digs.

For the Zias, freshman outside hitter Lauren Frye compiled eight kills while senior libero Hayley Couch, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II in digs, had a team-high 17 for the match
