The Portales girls soccer team got a quick goal Tuesday, then struggled for much of the match.
Artesia held the Lady Rams off the board again until the final five minutes and the Lady Bulldogs held on for a 3-2 victory at PHS.
Freshman Chelsea Lopez put the Lady Rams (5-11) in front in the sixth minute, but Artesia’s Alyssa Tayez tied it shortly thereafter, converting a penalty kick after PHS was called for a handball in the box.
The Lady Bulldogs (6-10) led 2-1 at halftime, then got an insurance goal from Tiffany Cano with about seven minutes left.
Sophomore Kiersten Ramirez scored to get PHS close again, but that was it.
“We just weren’t playing together today,” Lady Rams assistant coach Amber Thomas said. “We picked it up in the second half, but it was a little bit of a frustrating game.”
Both teams had 10 shots on goal. Senior Jasmine Vega had seven saves in goal for the Lady Rams.
Portales returns to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. District 2/1A-3A match at home against St. Michael’s. Boys teams meet in the first half of the doubleheader at noon.
