RIO RANCHO — The Portales Lady Rams’ run to a possible Class 3A state volleyball championship ended against an old nemesis on Friday night.

Pojoaque, seeded third, posted a 25-19, 26-24, 25-20 win over the second-seeded Lady Rams (17-6) in a semifinal match at Santa Ana Star Center. The Elkettes (19-4), who beat the Lady Rams to win state titles in 2010 and 2011 but lost to them in the Peyton Chavez Tournament of Champions at the RAC in early October, face PHS’ District 4-3A rival, Ruidoso, in today’s 11 a.m. championship match. The Lady Warriors (14-11) upended Sandia Prep 25-22, 15-25, 25-16, 25-13 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Earlier, Portales advanced with a 21-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-13 quarterfinal win over Raton.

Senior outside hitter Kristen Wagner banged out 24 kills as PHS overcame a first-game loss, pretty much controlling play after that against the Lady Tigers (12-11).

“I thought we played poorly in the first game,” Chavez said. “We just didn’t serve very well and we had too many errors, but after that we pretty much took them out of it.”

The Lady Rams combined for 13 service aces in the match, getting seven of them from junior setter Brooke Lopez and four from senior libero Francis Armijo.
