Zias drop to 0-4 after setback to Dustdevils

LAREDO, Texas — Senior forward Malika Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Monday night as Texas A&M International posted a 69-59 women’s basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University.

Senior guard Tina Dang went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and scored 16 points for the Dustdevils (3-0), while sophomore guard Jessica Prieto added 3-for-5 from long range and 11 points.

Sophomore guard Jordyn Cooper led the Zias (0-4) with 12 points, going 5-for-8 from the floor. Freshman guard Cara Barnard added six points and team highs of nine rebounds and three assists.

The Zias led twice early, going on an 8-0 run that included two baskets by Jasmine Johnson and one each by Jordyn and Jaylyn Cooper for an 11-4 lead four minutes in. The Dustdevils ended a scoring drought of four minutes and eventually outscored ENMU 27-8 over a span of 10 minutes to build a 15-point lead.

They led 39-25 at halftime, then opened their biggest lead at 19 early in the second half on a basket by Malika Jackson and a 3-pointer by Dang. The closest the Zias were able to get after that was 60-52 with 5:12 left after a pair of free throws by Jordyn Cooper.

ENMU shot 44 percent for the game, but went just 3-for-11 from 3-point range overall and 4-of-11 from the foul line in the first half. The Zias collected 11 steals, with seven players getting into the act.

Next up for the Zias is a trip to New Mexico State for a 1 p.m. contest on Thursday.
