DENVER CITY — A big second quarter carried the Portales Lady Rams to victory in coach Wade Fraze’s debut, and now the Lady Rams are preparing to see an old rival.
Sophomore Kambrey Blakey scored 17 points and the Lady Rams defeated Sundown 48-37 in a quarterfinal matchup in the Denver City Shootout. Portales will take on two-time defending Class 3A state champion and District 4-3A rival Lovington, a winner over Brownfield, in semifinal play.
Today’s tournament schedule has been postponed due to road conditions. The semifinal and final rounds are now scheduled to be played on Saturday.
Leading by just two points, the Lady Rams went on a 12-1 run for a 26-13 halftime lead. The teams played about even throughout the second half.
“The second quarter was big for us,” Fraze said. “I think we finally settled into the game a little bit, and we played some sound defense.”
Portales held the Lady Roughnecks (3-5) to nine field goals for the game. Sundown stayed relatively competitive by converting 17-of-19 free throw opportunities.
Freshman Jenna Legan led all scorers with 19 points for Sundown.
