Portales bests Bernalillo

MORIARTY — Portales had a pretty good battle on its hands for a half on Thursday.

In the final two quarters, though, it was all Lady Rams.

Sophomore guard Sheraya Cox led a balanced attack with 12 points — all 12 PHS players scored — and the Lady Rams held Bernalillo to nine second-half points in pulling away to a 59-31 quarterfinal win in the Moriarty Invitational.

Sophomore Kambrey Blakey added 11 points for Portales (4-0), which led by a relatively modest margin of 29-22 at the intermission.

“What happened was we blocked out (on rebounds) better in the second half,” Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “That was mostly what we emphasized at halftime.”

Portales is slated to take on the winner of Thursday’s late game between Atrisco Heritage and host Moriarty in a 7 p.m. semifinal game today.

The Lady Rams dealt with some foul issues early, including four in the first half on Blakey, which contributed to their inability to put the game away earlier.

“They (referees) were really calling it tight and we weren’t moving our feet on defense,” Fraze said of the first half. “We fixed that at halftime.”

Deana Lopez matched Cox for game scoring honors with 12 points to pace the Lady Spartans.
