PLAINVIEW, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women put together a hot shooting night — until the final few minutes.
Wayland Baptist overcame an eight-point deficit with a 17-0 run over the final three minutes to hand the Zias a 92-83 loss on Friday night.
Angeleigh Davis led four Pioneers in double figures with 20 points, while Iesha Green posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds
For the Zias, junior forward Tori Tucker poured in a season-best 22 points, hitting 6-of-9 3-pointers as ENMU went 14-of-25 from beyond the arc. Also, sophomore guard Jordyn Cooper scored 19 points and had a career-best six steals, while sophomore forward Nelsha Peterson added 14 points and six rebounds and junior post Jasmine Johnson had 10 points and a team-high seven caroms.
Also junior point guard Lakeeyscia Griffin had 10 of ENMU’s 24 assists.
ENMU (2-6) shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, in building a 47-42 halftime lead. The Zias were up by as much as 14 points in the second half before the Pioneers (3-4) began their comeback.
Wayland returned the favor in the second half, shooting 15-of-27 from the foul line and 6-of-10 from long range. The Pioneers went 20-of-31 from the foul line on 22 Zias fouls, while Wayland was called for just nine personals and the Zias finished 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
ENMU doesn’t return to action now until Jan. 6 when the Zias host Lubbock Christian in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at Greyhound Arena.
