Two of the Portales High School students who are in Albuquerque this week as members of the New Mexico Music Educators Association All-State Choir share more than a common hometown.
Junior Lindsey Bartlett and freshman Anna Erwin are the first alumni of the Eastern New Mexico Children’s Choir to win spots in the state-wide mixed chorus. I am confident more will follow their musical footsteps.
Lindsey spent a year in the ENMCC, and Anna was there for five semesters. Both credit their experience with director Heather Vest as being instrumental to their success.
“She’s a wonderful and very devoted choir director,” Lindsey told me. Anna said, “Mrs. Vest is amazing. I would not be the confident singer I am today if I hadn’t been in ENMCC.”
Since its founding in 2010, dozens of area youth have been supplied with a solid background in choir essentials, while adding sweet voices to local events. This spring’s group will be singing in ENMU’s February production of “Hansel and Gretel.” Signup and first rehearsal for students in grades 3-8 will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Eastern’s School of Music.
“I have big dreams for this choir,” Heather Vest says, and she is rightly proud of her protégés. “I grin from ear to ear when I think about Lindsey and Anna doing so well as singers.”
