Rams rally, get by Pintos

MORIARTY — The Portales Rams recovered from an early rotation shakeup, and took advantage when the Moriarty Pintos had one of their own to leave town with a 53-46 victory Saturday night.

Zach Campbell had 21 points to lead Portales (10-8) while Caleb Burciaga, who took over the main offensive duties after Daniel Sanchez went down with an ankle injury, scored 14 points for the Rams.

It didn’t look good early for the Rams, as 6-foot-8 sophomore Jake Flaming dominated offensively to help Moriarity to an 18-6 first-quarter lead.

“They went into the big kid, and he had eight points in the first quarter,” Portales coach Rickie McBroom said. “We were trying to front, and they were just throwing it to the back.”

Additionally, Portales lost Sanchez, who scored 18 points in the Rams’ 61-52 win over previously undefeated Texico on Friday.

“We’re proud of our kids, because they were able to keep their focus,” McBroom said. “Some kids stepped up.

“(Burciaga’s) role changed because Daniel came down with the injury. He’s one of our better rebounders, and he got more opportunities with the ball. He stepped up big time.”

The Rams took the halftime lead with a rally in the second quarter, partially fueled by Flaming going to the bench with his third foul.

McBroom felt that earlier in the season, the game might not have been one where Portales rallied.

“We’ve matured enough that we kept playing hard and together,” McBroom said. “We’re more mature than earlier in the year. We play a tough schedule, and it’s helped tremendously. We know we have to play really, really hard or we’re in trouble.”

Flaming ended up with 26 points on the night, and missed the only free throw the Pintos (8-9) attempted all game.

The Rams are back at home this week, hosting Tucumcari on Tuesday and New Mexico Military Institute on Friday.
