Eastern New Mexico was denied a sweep in its first series of the season Sunday, as visiting Adams State took a 6-2 win Sunday to avoid being blanked in the four-game, three-day series.
First baseman Kyle Sedlak went 1-for-3 with a run scored for Adams State (2-5), but managed each of his RBIs on recorded outs. Sedlak, who scored ASU’s first run in the second, drove in a run on a third-inning sacrifice fly and another on a fifth-inning groundout.
The Grizzlies didn’t need much more help than that, surviving a sixth inning marked by shortstop Brett Ackerman’s two-run single for ENMU (3-1), which outscored the Grizzlies 22-6 in picking up the first three wins of the series.
Ben Williams pitched seven innings for his first win of the season, with one of two runs earned on nine hits to go with four strikeouts. Starter Brett Humphries took the loss for ENMU, allowing five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
The Greyhounds continue their eight-game homestand with a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands. The series includes a 5 p.m. single game Friday, a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and the 1 p.m. Sunday finale.
