CANYON, Texas — In winning four of five games in the WT Invitational, hosted by West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team showed plenty of late-inning magic.
ENMU won in its final at-bat for the fourth time in the event, including its third walkoff, with an 8-7 victory over Adams State in Sunday’s finale matching Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads.
After giving up the lead when three Grizzlies doubles plated two runs in the top of the seventh, the Zias (5-6) opened the bottom half with singles from freshman Audrey Velasquez and Shelby Ripple, who moved up on a sacrifice by junior Lizzy Velasquez. Kyra Sirag, who beat Colorado State-Pueblo 3-2 on Friday with a three-run, pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh, tied this one with an RBI single to right-center before sophomore designated player Albie Medina scored Ripple with a single to right.
Trailing 4-0, ENMU sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fourth on four hits and two Adams State errors.
Junior Mary Jo Granger worked into the seventh in the circle before freshman Cailin Garmon (3-3) got the final two outs and earned the win with the Zias’ comeback.
ENMU travels to San Antonio this weekend for the Rattler Invitational, hosted by St. Mary’s. The Zias face Rogers State at 9 a.m. (MST) on Friday in their first game.
