RUIDOSO — What a difference from when Portales High’s boys last played in Ruidoso a week ago.

Friday night, the Warriors held PHS to 21 points through three quarters and cruised to a 60-45 win, creating a three-way tie at 2-2 in three-team District 4-3A. Thursday night, the Rams shot 51 percent from the field and led from the second quarter on en route to a 65-50 victory in the district tournament semifinal.

Portales (14-12) advances to Saturday’s 7 p.m. championship game at Lovington. Meantime, the PHS and Lovington girls will square off in the first half of the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m.

Senior post Zach Campbell scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Rams, who limited Ruidoso to five second-quarter points while opening a 28-19 halftime lead.

“The kids executed extremely well on defense, especially in the second quarter,” PHS coach Rickie McBroom said. “And we played as well as we’ve played in a while on the offensive end.

“In the second quarter, we were able to draw them out of their zone (defense), and once that happened they couldn’t guard us. The kids worked hard and showed up ready to play.”

The Rams were never seriously threatened in the second half, building a 22-point lead in the final quarter.

Senior Caleb Burciaga also had seven rebounds for Portales, while junior guard Matt Martinez was credited with eight assists.

Senior Adam Ramos had five 3-pointers and a game-high 18 points for the Warriors (10-17), while senior Travis Mosher added 11 points.

Despite their record, McBroom said he expects the Warriors to make the 16-team Class 3A state field, which will be announced on Sunday.

“All three of us will make it,” he said of the district. “We helped ourselves (in seeding) a lot (with Thursday’s win), and we can help ourselves even more on Saturday.”
