WINGATE — The Portales boys got the rubber match against Wingate on Saturday, and now will try to beat the top team in Class 3A.

Senior post Zach Campbell scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as PHS used a 7-0 run in the final period to outlast the Warriors 53-49 in a 3A round-of-16 state contest.

The ninth-seeded Rams face top-seeded Hope Christian (22-4), which routed Raton on Saturday night, in a 1:15 p.m. quarterfinal game on Wednesday at Rio Rancho’s Santa Ana Star Center.

“We’ve seen them on film,” Rams coach Rickie McBroom said. “We were at their tournament last year, and we kind of know who they’ve got coming back.”

The Rams (15-13), who opened the game on a 10-0 run, watched the Warriors come back to 14-11 by the end of the quarter and take several small leads during the second half. The last came at 43-42 with about five minutes left.

Junior guard Matt Martinez then hit a floater to put the Rams in front before Campbell converted a three-point play. Senior Nathan Chavez erased any doubt by making two free throws with nine seconds left.

“I’m just real proud of the kids,” McBroom said. “We had a great week of practice. The things we did to prepare for the tournament we were able to execute.”

Chavez also finished with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Caleb Burciaga was the third PHS player with 10 rebounds as the Rams dominated the glass 39-23, and they went 11-for-14 from the free throw line.

PHS beat Wingate 55-45 at Greyhound Arena in December, then lost to the Warriors 54-45 in the St. Mike’s Shootout in Santa Fe in mid-January.

“We were expecting a really tight game,” McBroom said. “Zach did a good job. We didn’t get a lot of free throws, but we took advantage of what we got.

Six-foot-3 junior Kennelle Jones led Wingate with 17 points, while freshman guard Brandon Beone hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
