ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s track teams finished sixth and in the middle of the pack in the War Hawk Classic, hosted by McMurry University.
McMurry took the men’s team title with 108 points to 92 for Tarleton State, while the Greyhounds finished with 20 points.
West Texas A&M won the women’s title with 90 1/2 points to 69 1/2 for McMurry. The Zias had 48.
ENMU took both distance medley relays. The men’s foursome of freshman Mason Thomas and Scott Wesselink and seniors Matt Dominguez and Jacob Lozano ran a time of 10 minutes, 40.29 seconds while the women finished in 12:43.82 with juniors Beth Blind, Sabrina Huelga, sophomore Amber Saiz and senior Brittany Buchanan.
Buchanan and Blind also set school records, Buchanan winning the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:21.44 and Blind finishing second in the 1,5600 in 4:41.05. Junior Kris-Ann Walters added another win for the Zias in long jump at 18 feet, 3 inches, and also took third in triple jump at 34-7 1/2.
Also, Huelga was second (2:20.13) and Saiz third (2:20.83) in the 800, while sophomore Laura Grube placed third in discus (136-10) and fifth in hammer (138-5).
The men also picked up a second-place finish in high jump from senior Michael Moore at 6-8, and a fourth from Thomas in the 800 at 2:01.27.
ENMU’s next outing is in the University of Texas Relays at Austin from Wednesday until Friday.
