Lopez places second in Artesia

ARTESIA — Sophomore Mireya Lopez earned a second-place finish at girls No. 6 singles, highlighting Portales High performances in the Artesia Invitational tennis tournament on Friday and Saturday.

PHS girls finished with 15 team points while the boys had one point in the eight-school event. Team standings were not available.

Lopez defeated an opponent from Silver 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, (10-6) in her first-round matchup, then beat an Onate player 6-0, 6-1 before losing to a New Mexico Military opponent 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

Three other Lady Rams entries placed in Friday’s singles competition, with senior Jessie Privett placing fourth at No. 1 and juniors Samantha Lopez at No. 3 and Belle Youngerwolf at No. 4 coming in fifth.

In doubles, Privett and Zamorye Cox were fourth at No. 1 and McKenzie Bucksath and Hannah Evans placed fifth at No. 3.
