RUIDOSO — While the Portales Lady Rams still finished last in the 14-team Leroy Gooch Invitational, they showed marked improvement over their first-round performance.
The Lady Rams shot a score of 400 on Tuesday at Cree Meadows Golf Course to finish at 845, just two strokes behind Roswell High and Silver. Deming took team honors at 675, followed by Socorro at 705.
The PHS boys, meantime, finished 13th in an 18-team field at 724. Socorro rallied past first-day leader New Mexico Military to win at 629, while the Colts (641) slipped to third place behind Hobbs (635).
Sophomore Bailey Rowley was the only PHS girl to shoot under 100 on either day, finishing at 89-85 — 174. Still, three Lady Rams knocked off at least 13 strokes at Cree (par 71) from their showing at The Links of Sierra Blanca (par 72) on Monday, including a whopping 39 strokes by freshman Alexis Montoya.
Socorro’s Shania Berger and Mia Salome tied for individual honors at 154.
For the boys, who played at The Links on Tuesday after opening at Cree Meadows, freshman Andrew Underbrink shot an 87 on Tuesday to finish at 170. He was seven shots ahead of junior Ty Bergman, who posted a 91 on Tuesday.
Socorro’s Sean Moore shot a 71 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 150, rallying past first-day leader Nick Gillihan of Las Cruces High to take individual honors..
PHS squads return to action next Monday and Tuesday in the Spring Classic at Roswell.
