Tennis squads get split at Artesia

ARTESIA — The Portales Lady Rams managed to win two of three doubles matches and pulled out a 5-4 dual victory over Artesia on Tuesday.

Artesia took an 8-1 victory over PHS in the boys dual.

Samantha Lopez and Belle Youngerwolf posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Hannah Evans and McKenzie Bucksath won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 for the Lady Rams.

The teams split the six singles matches, with Jessie Privett, Evans and Mireya Lopez notching wins for Portales.

In boys competition, the Rams’ lone win came at No. 3 singles when freshman Zach Laurenz, leading 0-6, 6-3, 4-2, was awarded the victory when his opponent, Josiah Kraft, retired with an injury.

PHS, though, did extend two of the doubles matches to three sets before losing.

The Rams and Lady Rams return to action on Thursday with District 3-1A/3A duals at Lovington.
