Ruidoso wasn’t the only visitor to cause trouble for Poratles Monday.
On a day where winds continued to batter eastern New Mexico, it was just a day the Portales teams wanted to survive. The girls got out with a 9-0 victory in less than two hours at the Eastern New Mexico University tennis courts, while the boys weren’t so lucky with a 6-3 loss to the Warriors at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Center.
The Portales girls never went to a third set, though Hannah Evans did need a tiebreaker to hold off Erica French in No. 2 singles. The Lady Rams lost only three games in sweeping three doubles matches.
“It was nice to get the wins quick,” Portales girls coach Ann-Marie Bucksath said. “They adjusted very well to the wind. We thought it would be a challenge, but they stepped.”
For the boys, the circumstances were a little more difficult against a Ruidoso team it had beaten earlier this season at a tournament hosted by Roswell High.
“We played them this time around, but we’re a completely different team,” boys coach Logan Brown said. “We lost our No. 2 player (from then) because of injuries and our No. 4, who quit. Almost everybody was moving up one or two positions. We did about what I thought we would do.”
Austin Lucero was the only undefeated player on the day for the boys, beating Daniel Marshall in straight sets in No. 1 singles and teaming up with Nathan Van Dam for a 7-5, 7-5 victory in No. 1 doubles.
The Portales teams enter district play this weekend in Lovington. Players will play to reach the state tournament in singles and doubles on Friday, and will compete in team play on Saturday.
