The Altrusa Int’l. Inc. club of Portales met Nov. 9 in the Central Office Annex with 25 members and two guests present.
President Nancy Legleiter called the meeting to order. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved and Secret Pals were thanked.
Leslie Paternoster gave the Altrusa Accent.
An update was given on Holiday Happening, scheduled for Dec. 5. Wanda Pettus reported she had helped with Officer training for the ASTRA club, and encouraged other members to attend their meetings.
The ASTRA club donated 30 coats to the Altrusa club’s coat drive for Make a Difference Day.
Members were reminded to bring the pink lids from yogurt containers to donate for breast cancer research.
The next meeting is Nov. 23 and Ida Bender, District 10 governor from Albuquerque is the guest speaker and initiate new members.
Jo Anna Baker introduced Greg Fisher, Roosevelt County Community Development Corp. executive director, who gave an update on things happening in Portales and Roosevelt County. The meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.
Portales Woman’s Club
Portales Woman’s Club met on Wednesday, Nov. 11 with President Della Kobernick presiding. There were 34 members and several guests present. The Collect was led by Carol Fletcher, the pledges by Iris Johnson, and Gertie Swager gave the invocation.
The October minutes were approved. Correspondence was read and news of members was given.
Three donations were made to the club’s scholarship fund in honor of Jane Hilliard. June Ferguson won the door prize.
Ferguson initiated the following new members: Beva Spotswood, Rosalie Richards, Beth Davis, Mary Lou Rowley, Argen Duncan and Mary Mendoza. Sponsors of the new members were also recognized.
Teresa Howard, Civic Chair, asked for volunteers to provide cookies and help with the annual Mayor’s Christmas tree on Monday, Nov. 16 at the city hall. Gertie Swager reported $1,150 was raised during peanut festival.
Gaynelle Thomas gave an update on plans for the GFWC NM State Convention to be held in Portales in April. Heidi Foshee, Home Life Chair, asked for various items to be brought to the next club meetings for local charities. The President announced that Portales Woman’s Club had been honored as volunteers of the month for October and showed the certificate she was presented.
June Ferguson was nominated for GFWC NM President Elect. Anne McMath introduced the hostess committee: Sondra Myers, Heidi Foshee, as well as Patrice and Franchesca Tompkins.
Following the business meeting, Sheryl Borden introduced Rev. Michael Brunk, First United Methodist Church, who gave the program.
The next meeting is 11:30 a.m. Dec. 9 and members are asked to bring three dozen cookies or candies to be shared with women from Cannon Air Force Base.
