Brass hitting Clovis

The Dallas Brass may not resonate far outside of musical circles, but the impact on bands at Clovis Municipal Schools is about to be felt.


“If you were like a pop music person and somebody would say ‘The Beatles,’ they’d know who it was,” said Wayne Anderson, CMS music coordinator, explaining the fame associated with the six-member group scheduled for a pair of concerts with Clovis high school and middle school bands.


Dallas Brass will take center stage Wednesday night at Marshall Auditorium, then will follow May 15 with the All-Band Night/Pops Honor Concert at Rock Staubus Gymnasium.


Both concerts are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets for Dallas Brass are $10 for adults and $5 for students, but ticket stubs are also good for free admission to the All-Band performance. The May 14 show is $3 for adults, and $2 for children.


The group, made up of one percussionist and five brass players, will also be doing workshops with the Clovis bands between evening performances before they leave for a May 16 perfromance in Alamogordo.


“We’re working them hard,” Anderson said. “They’ll know they’ve been to Clovis when we get through with them.”


On Thursday, the Dallas Brass will join the CHS Freshman Campus band for a performance of “American Tableau,” and the  combined bands of Yucca and Marshall middle schools to play a mixture of John Williams’ compositions for the “Star Wars” motion picture series.


The group will also play “Tejas,” a piece it arranged, with a 120-piece band from Clovis High.
