United Daughters of the Confederacy

Ellen W. Jones Chapter 1022 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held their March meeting at Roosevelt General Hospital in the hospitality room. Jan Ross and Janelle Foster were hostesses. A St. Patrick’s Day theme was used in decorations and favors.

Janelle Foster, president, called the meeting to order. Della Kobernick, secretary, read the minutes. In the absence of the treasurer, the president gave the report.

Commemorative Chairman, Nena Stratton had prepared lovely booklets on “A Parade of Heroes” for each member. The booklets gave a descriptions of each of the confederate officers during the war between the states. These are honored each February to commemorate their contributions and military leadership.

The “We Can” project was being carried out with a food donation to the Community Chest of Portales. This is done three times a year as part of the national organization’s project.

Discussion was held on the sidewalk repairs in the UDC Circle at the cemetery. Correspondence was read form the Georgia and South Carolina Divisions endorsing candidates for the National Convention to be held in November.

The April meeting will be at Roosevelt General Hospital. Guests are welcome. Any woman is eligible for membership if she has a confederate ancestor and can prove lineage.

 

Chaparral Extension Club

The Chaparral Extension Club met Feb. 25 at Trinity Luthern Church with nine members and one guest, Christine Marquez, present.

Jeanetta Mesner called the meeting to order. Sandra Stalcup furnished a poem called “Kindness.”

June Phillips read the minutes. Dorothy Bean gave the treasurers report. Sheryl Abdill gave a report on the domino tournament.

The group voted to make a thank you donation to the church and finalized plans for entertaining the Fairfield club in March.

Sheryl presented the past two leader trainings on Smart Shopping and Complaint Free World.

Hostesses Lois Lewis and Sheryl served refreshments.

Educational retirees association

Curry County Association of Educational Retirees met March 2 at Furr’s Cafeteria. Pam Wallace, president, opened the meeting.

Marion Richards gave the opening prayer and members pledged to the flags.

Linda Hensley was welcomed as a new member.

Linda Lazono presented the program about the Hartley House. The program for domestic violence started in Portales and later added in Clovis.

The meeting continued with reading and approval of minutes and treasurer’s report. Benevolence reported sending six cards. Membership report by Linda Milburn stating 268 local members.

Delman Shirley gave a printed statement of bills passed and noted that SB 18 dealing with State Investment Bodies has yet to pass.

Members were reminded to keep track of their volunteer hours.

Next meeting will be April 6 with program given by Jackie and Debra from Vista Care.
