Altrusa International of Portales met on Monday in the Sandia Room at the ENMU Campus Union Building with 23 members and 3 guests present. Vaunceil Turnbough, president, presided over the business meeting and conducted the opening ceremonies.
Rosalie Richards, on behalf of the Sunshine Committee, conducted a memorial for Pam Bernier, who died recently. Also speaking was Kenda Dickenson.
The club welcomed Jo Nell Brooks back following her recent knee surgery. Gaynelle Thomas drew for the Queen of Hearts, and Nellie Dyer was recognized as the “Mystery Member.”
Frankye King gave an update on the Home Tour scheduled for September. She announced three houses had been secured and asked members to submit names for two additional homes for this year’s tour, which is scheduled for Sept. 28.
The members approved the revised budget for 2008-2009. Sheryl Borden presented information on the luncheon for the Roosevelt County Fair Queens to be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 in the Jake Lopez Building at the fair grounds. The club voted to have the meal catered, and members will help set up for the luncheon the day prior.
Linda Yeast, Service Committee Chair, presented ideas for service projects. The club voted to paint house numbers for various neighborhoods. The committee will make additional arrangements regarding date, time and locations. The president asked members to turn in names of prospective members to the membership committee in preparation for Guest Day on Aug. 25.
Wanda Pettus and Sheryl Borden conducted an initiation service for two new members, Sarah Fisher and Mandy Park.
The executive board will meet on Aug. 4 and the next club meeting will be Aug. 11, and the communications committee will be in charge of the program.
