Menaul at Melrose
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Menaul 0-0, Melrose 1-0
Last week: Menaul did not play. Melrose beat Magdalena 52-16.
Last meeting: 2007, Melrose 56-24.
Skinny on Menaul: Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said the Panthers are led by sophomore QB Jayseph Griego and a pair of 200-pound RBs. “The quarterback is really good, but he lost his go-to receivers.”
Upon further review: Cornerbacks Lane Draper and Zach Pack played the run well against Magdalena, forcing three fumbles with solid hits.
Of note: Senior LB/RB Call Barnard is drawing interest from West Texas A&M. Barnard is list at 6-1 and 200 pounds. ... Menaul’s season-opener against Pine Hill was canceled.
Coach’s comment: “This is the most physical team I’ve had.” — Roybal

Clayton at Fort Sumner
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Clayton 1-0, Fort Sumner 1-0
Last week: Clayton beat Dulce 48-8, Fort Sumner beat NMMI 26-7.
Last meeting: 2007, Fort Sumner 49-9
Skinny on Clayton: Class 2A Yellowjackets return QB Colby Trujillo and RBs Timmy Montoya and Samuel Overmeyer. Bobby Spinelli returns as head coach.
Upon further review: TE Christian Pettigrew was a force blocking for Foxes. He did a great job of getting under the pads and allowed us to turn the corner,” Fort Sumner coach Matt Moyer said. Moyer said Pettigrew also did a good job of staying on his blocks.
By the numbers: Fort Sumner has won seven of eight meetings between the teams since 2000.
Coach’s comment: “Our biggest worry is about their tailback (Overmeyer). He looks real quick. He looks like a big kid.” — Moyer.

Texico at Springlake-Earth
When: 6:30 p.m. today
Records: Texico 0-0, Springlake-Earth 1-0
Last week: Texico’s game against Dexter was canceled early in the second quarter by lightning. Dexter was leading 7-0. Springlake-Earth beat Vega 16-0.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Skinny on Springlake-Earth: “They’re big, have good speed and they’re quarterback does some good things,” Texico coach Mike Prokop said. “They also have a couple of good running backs.”
Shaping up: Prokop said he’s concern about conditioning heading into the game. Springlake-Earth has two scrimmages and a game under their belts, he said. Texico has a scrimmage and a little more than a quarter of a game.
Of note: Texico scrimmaged Vega during the preseason .... Former ENMU QB James Williams and LB Mike Walton played at Springlake-Earth.
By the numbers: Springlake-Earth finished with 209 yards against Vega — 107 rushing and 102 passing.
Coach’s comment: “We have to cut down on our mental errors. We can’t expect to make those kind of mistakes against these guys.” — Prokop.

Plains at Farwell
When:
6:30 p.m. today
Records: Plains 1-0, Farwell 0-1.
Last week: Plains defeated Wink, Texas, 16-12. Farwell lost to Olton 21-9.
Last meeting: 2007, Plains 20-8
Skinny on Plains: Farwell coach Mark Anglin said the Cowboys average more than 220 pounds in the offensive line, with only one player under 235. “Their offensive line is huge, but we played against a big offensive line against Olton,” Anglin said.
Upon further review: After carrying the lead into halftime, the Steers drove deep into Olton territory on their first second-half possession but came away empty. “The offense has got to execute and score, and get their confidence,” Anglin said. “I’m pretty happy with our defense; I think they’ll hold up pretty well.”
By the numbers: Trying to implement a spread offense this season, the Steers were limited to 154 yards against Olton.

Bovina at Sudan
When: 6:30 p.m. today
Records: Bovina 0-1, Sudan 1-0.
Last week: Bovina lost to Hale Center 39-24. Sudan defeated Ralls 14-6.
Last meeting: 2007, Bovina 35-7.
Skinny on Sudan: The Hornets have a 6-foot-7 tight end and a 6-3 wide receiver, Bovina coach Hector Guevara noted, but he said his team should match up pretty well. “Our secondary is probably our strongest point right now,” he said.
Upon further review: “Last week I was pretty pleased with our effort against Hale Center, even though we lost,” Guevara said.
Of note: Last year’s matchup was a District 4-1A contest, but this year Bovina has moved into District 3-1A while Sudan is in 5-1A.

Clovis Christian at Springer
When:
4 p.m. Saturday
Records: Clovis Christian 0-1. Springer 0-1.
Last week: Clovis Christian lost to Gateway Christian 44-8.
Springer lost to Logan 34-8.
Last meeting: 2007, Springer 20-16.
Skinny on Springer: The Red Devils ride the one-two offensive punch of Johnny Chavez and Jesus Urquijo, who rotate at QB, RB and WR. Chavez is a speed burner. “We have know where they are and put a helmet on them, especially Chavez,” CCS coach Jason Swann said.
Upon further review: Junior DE/NG Cordy Wilhoit was in the backfield all night while senior WR Ben Young caught a 45-yard TD pass and added a 50-yard gain on a reverse.
Of note: The Eagles shut out Gateway Christian in second half.
Coach’s comment: “We have to limit the non-hustle penalties,” Swann said.
