Two-time defending Class 2A champion Texico and Class 1A favorite Fort Sumner earned the top seeds following pool play Wednesday at the state volleyball tournament in Albuquerque.

Texico went undefeated in six games in Pool A, including a sweep of second-round Estancia in which the Lady Wolverines rallied from 20-16 to beat the Bears 23-21.

The Lady Wolverines (20-2) face Penasco in today’s quarterfinals at the Johnson Center at the University of New Mexico.

“They just never quit,” first-year Texico coach Kristen Scanlan said. “They played excellent the next game.

“We continued to get better with each team we played, which was nice to see.”

Junior Katlin Luscombe collected 10 kills and 11 blocks in pool play for Texico while sophomore Fallon Scanlan dished out 41 assists.

Navajo Prep finished undefeated in Pool B, which included top-ranked Mesilla Valley, which went 3-3.

Meanwhile, Fort Sumner got off to a good start in pursuit of its second Class 1A title in three years.

The Vixens’ undefeated run through pool play including a 21-13, 21-13 sweep of 2007 champion Animas.

“I’m real pleased with the way we played against Animas,” Fort Sumner coach Lisa McMath said of the Vixens’ first match. “When we come out focused like that, nobody can beat us.

“They let down a bit in the last two matches. We forgot that the other teams can play ball.”

Fort Sumner meets Tatum in today’s quarterfinals.
