When we resume …

The Portales Rams ended Friday night up 7-0 on the Texico Wolverines. But the weather notched a 2-0 victory.

So the Rams and Wolverines will try to pick up action again 7 p.m. Saturday, following a Friday night opener that was delayed two hours by the first delay and postponed by the second.

The Rams will kick off one day and one play after Darion Ontiveros opened the scoring with a 1-yard run.

The game — the first official game on the turf of the new Greyhound Stadium, started at 7 p.m. with rain pouring but everything ready to go.

Texico got the opening kickoff and converted one first down, but after six offensive plays, the Wolverines were in a fourth-and-forever situation.

Their punt, with just 3:28 gone in the first, would wait nearly two hours as officials postponed the game for lightning warnings that just didn’t want to leave the 12-mile radius of the stadium.
Around 9:20 p.m. the game resumed with Portales returning the punt to Texico’s 47-yard line.

The rain came down harder, causing the Rams and quarterback Junior Ramirez understandable troubles handling the ball. Still, Ramirez led the team down to the Texico 1 following several quarterback keepers.

With the Rams knocking on the door, Ramirez mishandled the snap, but calmly picked it up and tossed it to running back Darion Ontiveros.

Ontiveros fumbled as well, but grabbed it back and carried the Wolverine defender into the end zone.

Following the extra point, the officials again cleared the field, this time for the night.
